Bonnie Schneider
Following my graduation with an Bachelor of Music (Boston University in 1963) and then observing an education in the liberal arts field as an academic (Brown University, 1971-1975), i am now a strong believer of an integrated approach to learning which includes studying art and other fields of study. This is not a surprise since the ethnomusicologist, who holds a doctorate as well as an MA from UCLA is enthusiastic about the arts. The ethnomusicology course I started in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) can be found in the department of music in a College of Letters and Science. I am a fan of pursuing multiple passions and looking at the whole image. Undergraduates as well as graduate students (for whom I wrote three textbooks: Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experimenting Music and expressing Cultural Expression) love my classes. Then I will alternate between periods of primarily academic pursuits and administrative tasks (I was Chair of Department of Music from 1983 through 1988, and Dean of Undergraduate Advising in 1992-98 and Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chairperson of the Group of Asian Studies from 1999, and I am now the Chair of Department of Music).
